REfficient now has customers in 10 provinces and territories, 24 US states and 9 other countries, and has doubled its workforce in the last year.

Launched in 2010, REfficient is an online marketplace allowing companies to go shopping in other companies’ surplus inventory for Telecom and AV equipment. Customers can also resell and recycle via the company’s platform, and receive sustainability reporting for their Corporate Responsibility reports. REfficient now counts many of Canada’s largest telecom companies as customers and has diverted more than one million pounds of ewaste from landfill. REfficient recently became Hamilton’s first Certified B Corp.

Now in its second year, the 1Awards Competition focuses on Hamilton-based companies that have produced quantifiable growth. The contest is funded by First Ontario Credit Union and the Hamilton Spectator, as well as Play Advertising, Mohawk IdeaWorks, Grant Thornton, AgroZaffiro and Weever Apps. Three companies were chosen as winners. REfficient will use the awarded $39,000 in cash and prizes to fuel the company’s expanding footprint.

Tell me about yourself and KITESTRING.

My name is Chris Farias and I am both Creative Director and partner at KITESTRING. We’re an agency comprised of strategists and creative inventors who solve brand equations.

Why did KITESTRING rebrand itself recently?

The agency is now in its sixth year, and just like the world around us, we’ve changed a lot in that time. The evolution of our brand reflects the caliber of work our team is creating for our clients.

What happened to Ben?

His internship came to an end and he moved on to a career in theatre. He came to visit recently and told us he was working with Hammer Entertainment on a production of Avenue Q. You can find out more by visiting: http://www.kitestring.ca/social/blog/community/ben-follows-his-dreams-and-hits-stage

What is The Right Angle?

The Right Angle is a KITESTRING event focused on strategies to help communicators and business owners engage in the conversation on social media. Attendees will learn from experts in the field how to manage your message online, protect your brand image, and problem-solve with confidence and creativity.

Why should web, mobile, and video game companies in particular care about social media management?

It’s up to innovative businesses to lead the way in terms of adopting and understanding new technology. Web, mobile and video game companies need to lead by example. If you’re positioned as a knowledgeable expert, your clients are more likely to follow suit.

What are you most hoping participants take away from The Right Angle?

We’ve noticed a big shift in attitudes about the relevance of social media in the eyes of regional organizational leaders. Leading up to this shift, we were often asked in a presentation or workshop, “Why is social media relevant?”

Now we’re consistently being asked, “How do I make my brand relevant on social media?” I’m hoping participants leave with an idea about how to accomplish that for their brand.

Hamilton in particular seems to have really embraced social media, between the popularity of the #HamOnt hashtag and the relevant communications and business courses at McMaster. Why do you think this is, and are there ways our community should be taking advantage of this strength?

There is a groundswell of citizens doing some amazing things in support of their city within our community. Of course, engaging communications are a part of making these incredible ideas sprout into mini-movements. The reason for this is complex; the perfect storm of timing, economics, culture and spirit.

Last summer we did an experiential meets social campaign at Art Crawl involving a new hashtag. We were shocked by just how encouraging the flood of response was. Three years ago, doing a similar self-promo campaign at Supercrawl garnered completely different levels of engagement. It’s clear to us that this city is now ready for more.

What trends have you noticed lately in social media marketing and branding and where do you see it going next?

I don’t have a crystal ball (Although some days I wish I did!). So, it wouldn’t be prudent for me to guess what the future holds. What’s really got me excited about the industry lately is a turn towards elements of social good becoming a natural part of any organization’s marketing mix. When a brand can create a hybrid of social good, digital engagement and a relevant connection to the everyday lives of its target audience, that’s something to take notice of. These principles have been guiding a few of our newest campaign strategies for our top clients.

Some people in the tech / startup community believe that the best product development talent is in Waterloo, and that the best sales and marketing talent in Toronto. Google has followed this sort of model, with a development studio in Waterloo and advertising / sales in Toronto. I think it’s great for the different cities in Southern Ontario to specialize and have strengths, but it’s concerning to me when it leads to people thinking there is a magic wall that somehow stops world class product development from being done in Hamilton. Is there a similar concern for somebody working in creative branding?

Of course! That may be a tired perception, but that hasn’t stopped us from working with the region’s top health care, education and innovation technology clients. A lot of people are surprised to know that we’ve also created campaigns for international clients. KITESTRING has created a niche for itself, and more and more our location is being viewed as something that is in our favour.

Can “big league” world class marketing be done out of Hamilton?

Yes. We have a close-knit community of talented marketers in this city. We’re a fierce bunch who isn’t afraid to change the landscape for local organizations and make a name for ourselves beyond the 905 area code. It’s going to be our ability to support one another and be proud of one another’s successes that will define the next while in terms of local progress for our industry.

Has KITESTRING worked with any tech companies in particular?

We’ve collaborated with Innovation Factory, the local technology SME hub, on a really neat integrated campaign. The STARTOFF campaign was a contest for local Innovation Factory clients, which involved videogame themed digital engagement in collaboration with Orbital, and pop-up 8 bit art installations around the city. We also work with EllisDon, an innovative, international construction company, helping them to define a new software launch set for the summer of 2013.

How did that work out for them?

Innovation Factory’s campaign has come to a close, so I can share these results. Combined with the engagement campaign, STARTOFF’s digital execution in mobile, social and desktop online developments were explored by laptops and computers, by iPhone, Blackberry, Android smartphones, and had been accessed through 2913 social media buzz mentions on Twitter and 17,102 visits from Facebook.

Where do you see Hamilton in 5 years? 10 years?

I know I would like to see Hamilton become a more walkable city. It would be great to see more people living and working downtown. I’d love to see a Yogen Früz in walking distance from my house. That’s just me.

Hamilton has a lot of hidden gems. There’s different blogs and websites devoted to spotlighting them. What’s your favourite hidden Hamilton gem?

It’s hard to keep hidden gems a secret in Hamilton because of the widespread adoption of the #HamOnt hashtag on Twitter. I’m not complaining, it’s actually a good thing. I think a great hidden gem is the Ottawa Street strolling district. The Ottawa Street BIA is a client of mine and I love when I get to get down there for a visit. There are great restaurants, a farmers market, fabric and crafting outlets, antique stores and clothing boutiques.

It’s NHL playoff time and many of us have hockey on the mind. Whether it’s “skating to where the puck is going to be” or “respect the game, love the grind”, hockey analogies are almost as popular in business as they are in Canadian politics.

The other day I heard a friend describing their role within their company to a co-worker, they said something roughly along the lines of, “I’m the person that deals with this shit so you don’t have to – I’m like the player on the team that handles the players on the other team so you can focus on scoring!” I don’t know if this friend is big into sports, but they were basically describing an enforcer in hockey.

Team sports are good preparation for working in a group during other facets of life. In sports roles just seem to emerge, sometimes based on personality, sometimes based on skill, sometimes both. Some people just have a state of mind set on scoring goals, and other people want to be the hero by stopping the other team from scoring. Even the sports themselves tend to attract different people and develop different skills. The roles in basketball are much more fluid and dynamic than football.

Team captains, scoring leaders, and heroic goaltenders tend to receive a lot of glory and admiration, and so they should. Even if you’ve got the natural talent required, it’s still hard as all hell to do what they do. These team leaders are often virtuous and high-minded. They want to win, badly, but within the constraints of the rules, because to win otherwise would deprive them of a true win. They often succeed by putting a deliberate effort into making everyone around them a better player.

But sometimes the other team doesn’t play fair. They punch below the belt, they play dirty. They can get away with it too. The ref can’t be looking everywhere all the time. And those same “virtuous qualities” of a team leader are left stunted and ineffective.

So in a game that is imperfect, the enforcer becomes an unfortunately necessary role. It’s not to say that everything enforcers ever do should be condoned. And it’s not to say that team leaders can’t be their own enforcers – dual threats do exist. I wouldn’t want to mess with Jarome Iginla! But the task of fighting fire with fire, taking the punches and landing some too, so that others may go about their work, is unfortunately often necessary, even if outside the official rulebook.

The role doesn’t get nearly the glory of the team captains and the scoring leaders. They’re “working class” superheros. They get praise for their spirit, but almost never their skill. They get called names like goon. The other teams hate them. They’re the “bad guy”. Often on the 4th line, the enforcer isn’t first in line to hoist the cup should their team win. And the powers that be, wanting a more perfect game, are always changing the rules to try to make their very role obsolete.

Enforcers exist in many other facets of life, and business is one of them. Sometimes the other party doesn’t play fair, and you need those people that are willing to be seen as the bad guy if it means getting the job done. Enforcer tactics and approaches are rarely ever a good first option. I mean just look how many times Worf’s ideas were denied!

But the truth about enforcers is that they are sometimes necessary, and they are coming from a good place – they want their team to win. Bless the enforcers.

McMaster and Cisco will also establish a university-wide research cloud computing environment and infrastructure. This partnership will see McMaster build on its renowned research successes and strengthen its links with national and international partners from academia, government and industry.

As part of the agreement, Cisco is providing a $2.1 million contribution to McMaster. The contribution includes $1.6 million over eight years to establish a Professorship in Integrated Health Biosystems, as well as $500,000 over five years to establish a Research Chair in Bioinformatics.

The Research Chair in Bioinformatics will collaborate on a program in Integrated Health Biosystems, the aim of which will be to bridge the existing gulf between data-intensive areas of biomedical research and healthcare by integrating diverse biological datasets with clinical and environmental data.

The Professorship in Integrated Health Biosystems will help to establish a cloud-based computational infrastructure designed to manage, analyze, integrate and distribute the vast amounts of data resulting from biomedical research, clinical trials, and patient feedback.

Current research initiatives at the university tend to store data in separate databases, accessed primarily by the original research team and seldom shared across different studies. By creating one simple cloud-based infrastructure to both house research data and provide high performance analysis, multiple Faculties at McMaster will have easy access to technology resources, and be able to seamlessly share data and collaborate for a more comprehensive delivery of results. In the future, this “research cloud” could serve multiple institutions and research facilities.

Facts and Highlights:

 — The proposed research cloud will help to lower operating costs for
researchers and facilitate the growth of cutting edge areas of research.

 — An institutional research cloud will allow McMaster to quickly grow,
change and adapt the computing environment as research needs dictate,
through greater flexibility and the quick positioning and migration of
computing resources to meet the changing needs of researchers.

 — A cloud-based architecture allows for a bring-your-own-device (BYOD)
model of access, granting researchers secure and easy access to sensitive
data kept safely on campus, from any resource connected to the internet.

 — McMaster expects the cloud environment will also facilitate research
sharing with other universities, institutes and colleges as well as
collaborations with industry.

Supporting quotes:

Dr. Patrick Deane, president and vice-chancellor, McMaster University:

“The significance of this partnership with Cisco is enormous. We’re home to some of the world’s leading researchers who continue to make discoveries through novel approaches and applications. The Chair in Bioinformatics and the Professorship in Biosystems will allow us to increase our research capacity and capture the value of the exponentially increasing volumes of data generated by our researchers. This investment will give us the much needed infrastructure to share our information with our local, national and global partners.”

Nitin Kawale, president, Cisco Canada:

“Living in an increasingly connected world brings certain challenges to researchers in terms of managing vast amounts of data and making it easily accessible to the right people for maximum benefit. Cisco and McMaster both realize that this challenge can be turned into a fantastic opportunity to not only improve the way this data is managed, but to also analyze how people’s connection to others and to devices continues to evolve. This innovative project has the potential to transform the way academic research is conducted in Canada and throughout the world.”

Handling a wide assortment of clients has got to be a whole lot of work. Are there any productivity tips and tricks you can share?

The key to handling the chaos of multiple projects for multiple clients is first having a fantastic project manager. The one person who stays on top of everything about every project. Second is using a great online management system such as Trello. It is also important at the very beginning of a project to make sure you have a clear list of task and milestones. That way everyone knows what needs to happen next and never have to ask, ‘What do I work on next?’.

What is your thought process when designing a mobile app solution for a customer?

Simplicity, Simplicity, Simplicity. We define what is the core goal of a project, and continue to refine our strategy until we reach the simplest and most effective way for an app to meet that core goal.

What do you think about the HTML5 vs native mobile app debate?

The majority of our applications are built using a Hybrid method. There are benefits to both methods. Native tends to be more robust, while HTML5 is quick and cost effective. I believe platforms such as Appcelerator are really setting the standard for future development.

In this YourHamiltonBiz article you mentioned that you left Hamilton for Toronto 10 years ago and that you’ve noticed a change upon returning. Can you elaboration that? What was Hamilton like 10 years ago, what’s changed, and what do you think we need to do to keep changing for the better?

It is a ‘community self worth’. Having grown up in Hamilton, I’ve always been a firm believer that Hamilton has some of the most creative people in Canada. The problem was that people outside and inside of Hamilton only ever saw the ‘Steel Factories’ and a blue collar workforce. It think that’s finally changed, there is a revived sense of pride in being a Hamiltonian. People can feel that. It’s nice to speak with people and clients from outside of Hamilton and have them ask questions about it, not just dismiss it as Steel town.

One thing I’ve noticed since I’ve moved back to Hamilton is that people are always asking ‘How do we get people outside of Hamilton to recognize what we have here?’. People and businesses are noticing what’s going on. Stop worrying about other people’s opinions, keep working hard and providing great services and products, and they won’t be able to ignore us. Attention and recognition are a byproduct of success.

Any advice for would be web / tech entrepreneurs?

Work hard, work smart. Find something you are passionate about. Find people who are equally passionate about the same thing and have complimentary skill sets. Then ‘Build small. Think big.’ and get that product out there. Your audience will be the ultimate judge.

What’s next for Hifyre?

We are continuing to grow our core service business and keep attracting top tier clients and brands. We are getting set to officially launch our new product ‘Hiwyre’ which is a cloud-based sales enablement & sales training tool for iPad. We are also building key partnerships with other service providers to help broaden our reach into new industries.
