People hoping for jobs with young, exciting startups now have a place to look. Hamilton’s first Startup Career Fair will take place on January 20th, allowing workers to meet and greet with local founders and CEOs, get a taste of the city’s startup ecosystem, and apply to positions ranging from intern to CEO.

Despite a wealth of talent in Hamilton, it can be difficult for job seekers to learn about opportunities with newer, smaller startups. For those looking for work outside of the usual corporate avenue, job hunting can be a challenge. The Startup Career Fair connects startup companies with job seekers and erodes that challenge.

The Forge (Hamilton’s startup accelerator) and SURGE (Mohawk College’s entrepreneurship initiative) are putting on the event with help from Spectrum (McMaster’s entrepreneurship extra-curricular), Innovation Factory (Regional Innovation Centre) and the city’s Small Business Enterprise Centre.

More than 50 Hamilton-area startups will be featured in the fair. They will be hiring for a range of positions: full-time, part-time, and internships; paid, volunteer, and equity-based.

“Many students want their careers to be something other than a typical cubical life. Startups are exciting and innovative. If you aren’t starting one yourself, why not work with one?” said Tyler Welch, of Spectrum.

Alex Pryor is another local entrepreneur. “The Start Up Career Fair is an opportunity for students of all kinds to network with people who need our skills. This is an opportunity not only for a job, but to better get to know our field. It is a chance to ask questions, and see what expectations employers have,” he said.

SURGE is supported through the CampusStart program, an initiative of the Government of Ontario managed by Ontario Centres of Excellence, and is a member of the Ontario Network of Entrepreneurs.
