YWCA Women in I.T. Program looking for Paid and Unpaid Placements

YWCA Hamilton offers the Women in IT (Information Technology) program designed to enable women to obtain further training and certification and secure employment in the IT industry. The program prepares women for well-paying employment in the information technology sector, and employers will be able to recruit and retain more skilled workers. It also includes training and certification towards an industry recognized certificate for IT related jobs and work placement. This initiative gives women the practical skills and knowledge as well as gender-sensitive in-class training to prepare them for on the job training and employment in the IT sector.

In this regard, we are asking you to consider supporting this program by providing a work placement (paid or unpaid) to one or more of the program participants for the role of web developers/designers or other IT related roles. The placements are looking to start in September 2017 and run for 12 weeks. Program participants will have completed their We Design & Development Certificate program with Mohawk College and developed the technical skills including but not limited to HTML, CSS, Dreamweaver, Flash and Photoshop.

Please contact Mimi John at mjohn@ywcahamilton.org if you can accommodate placement/s.

Women in IT – Info Session on Friday April 15th, 10am

YWCA Hamilton’s Women in I.T. program is now in its third year offering support and training to women with multiple barriers to skills upgrading, industry certification and access to employment in the IT sector completely free. In partnership with Mohawk College, participants can access IT academic training, work placement and job search support. In order to be eligible you must currently:

  • be¬†unemployed or under-employed
  • have at least a highschool completion
  • limited personal income
  • computer literate

I’ve had a small part in helping train Women in I.T. clients in year 2, as well as¬†hiring them¬†for some amazing logo design (http://dianacreate.com/¬†) and administrative assistance and research work. I’ve been extremely¬†impressed by the output of their select candidates. Not only does this program put¬†these women¬†through a gauntlet of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and WordPress but they are given support and opportunities to redefine their careers¬†and solidify their paths within the IT sector.

If you’re interested in hiring a Women in I.T. graduate, contact the YWCA Hamilton.

If you’re interested in participating as a student,¬†the next information session will be held at YWCA on Friday April 15th at 10am. The program is completely free. For registration, contact Jupiter Deveau at jdeveau@ywcahamilton.org.
